SUBSCRIBE NOW! “Socha zaroor, par hua nahin, yeh shukr hai varna World Cup miss ho jata mere sey,” Shami admitted candidly. “The thought came to my mind to end my life, but then I decided, this game, which gave me so much name, why should I jump to death, forgetting all this. I thought of love and affection. Then I decided, forget this and focus on my game.”

The 35-year-old pacer has been battling challenges off the field for years. In July 2025, the Calcutta High Court directed him to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter. Shami and Jahan, who married in 2014, separated in 2018 after allegations of domestic violence. Their daughter was born in 2015.

Reflecting on the barrage of criticism he has faced since those allegations, Shami said, “Bad things are spoken about, but nowadays those things are spoken about which do not exist. The number of allegations levelled against me in the last 6–7 years, maybe even a terrorist would not have been levelled so many allegations.” Shami has been grappling with form and fitness issues. His last competitive appearance came in May for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, where he went wicketless against Gujarat Titans. He managed only six wickets in nine matches during the season and was subsequently left out of India’s Asia Cup squad.
