Mirra Andreeva was stunned at the Berlin Tennis Open, as she was beaten in the first round by Magdalena Frech.

Andreeva was playing her first grass court tournament of the season, as she moved on from her quarter-final defeat at Roland Garros.

It was during that Roland Garros quarter-final against Lois Boission, where Andreeva struggled to deal with the French crowd.

This caused her to express her frustrations on Court Philippe-Chatrier, and now Andreeva has landed herself in hot water again.

Mirra Andreeva criticised for smashing the ball out of the stands at Berlin Tennis Open

Andreeva was beaten by Frech, 2-6 7-5 6-0, in her first ever defeat to the Polish number two.

Although the result was noteworthy in itself, what Andreeva did in the early stages of the second set caught the attention of some tennis fans.

Despite winning the first set, Andreeva smashed the ball out of the stands after being broken in the first game of the second.

This is not the first time that the Russian teenager has done something like this, with Andreeva also being criticised at Indian Wells for doing something similar.

As a result, Andreeva received heavy criticism on social media, with people calling for the world number seven to stop doing this before something bad happens.

One person said on X (formerly known as Twitter), “I mean this is bad in general but why are we getting this frustrated when you won the opening set 6-2 and you’ve simply just gone down a break in the first game of the 2nd, makes no sense. Like I said earlier, this has become a trend in some of her losses lately.”

Another social media user added, “She does this every single match when she’s losing—and that’s not an exaggeration. It really needs to stop. I don’t know why people excuse this behaviour. It’s not okay. Someone in her team needs to get her to stop before someone gets hurts.”

Although Andreeva is just 18-years-old, some thought her age did not give her an excuse to do things like this.

“She is a professional tennis player, gets paid as a professional, should be held to same standards as the rest of the professional tennis players. Her age is not an excuse… enough of that.”

While others suggested that Andreeva should be given a bit of time to figure out how to handle her emotions in high pressure moments.

Another player who has faced a lot of public struggle is Andrey Rublev, who has frequently expressed his frustrations on court.

Andreeva’s latest actions have caused some people to make comparisons between the two players.

What happened to Mirra Andreeva for the first time at the Berlin Tennis Open?

Not only was this the first time that Andreeva had lost a match to Frech, but it was also the first time that she had lost a deciding set 6-0.

Andreeva won just 12 points during the 28 minute third set, and is now just remaining in the doubles draw with partner Diana Shnaider.

The next chance for Andreeva to play on the singles match court will be at the WTA 500 event in Bad Homburg.

Fortunately for Andreeva, her world number seven ranking is not in much danger as she only has 11 ranking points to defend.

The last time that Andreeva won a singles match on grass was on her run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2023.
