Roy Keane Offers Surprising Keith Andrews Defence After Brentford Issues

There was a general sense of shock around Brentford's decision to appoint Keith Andrews as manager over the summer, with many quickly returning to previous comments that Roy Keane had made about the Dubliner.

The Brentford boss was a vocal critic of Martin O'Neill during his time in charge of Ireland, something Keane took personally as his assistant manager. The Cork native would have this to say about Andrews during his own time as the Ireland assistant manager under Stephen Kenny:

I've heard a lot of b*********rs over the last 10 years and Keith Andrews us up there with the best of them.

Keane would go on to suggest that Andrews needed to 'back up' his smooth talking in the aftermath of his appointment at Brentford in recent weeks.

Considering this, it might come as a surprise to see the Sky Sports pundit launch a defence of his compatriot on the back of what has been an up and down start for him in his new role.

Roy Keane Offers Surprising Keith Andrews Defence After Brentford Struggles

Brentford have had a mixed start to the season under Keith Andrews. While they have produced two impressive victories in the Carabao Cup, their Premier League form has been patchy at best. The club have taken four points from their first five fixtures, losing three games despite a draw against Chelsea and a win over Aston Villa.

Some have started to question the managerial appointment made by the club over the summer as a result.

Speaking on Stick To Football, Roy Keane would provide a surprising defence of Keith Andrews despite his questionable start to life as a manager.

They don't look like they will panic, Brentford. I think Brentford can be the type of club could lose a few games (and remain calm).

I think they could get a result against Man United, yeah. At home to United? I think they can get a result.

It's still early in the season, I don't think Brentford will be panicking. [Andrews] is a young manager...

I was not really (surprised by the appointment), obviously he was already in the club. He wouldn't have got another Premiership job anywhere else, it's just that he was in there and the people must think highly of him.

He's new to the job. Like any young manager, give the man a chance. They've played five (league) games...

It's been a difficult enough start for them, but I don't think the Brentford ownership will be panicking yet.

Considering that there is clearly no love lost between this pair, it is surprising to see Roy Keane provide this defence of Keith Andrews. In fact, he was far more positive about his prospects than the other Stick To Football pundits.

In fairness to the Cork man, he is consistent in his claims that managers should be given plenty of time at a club before being judged, something he has stuck to here despite his lack of affection for Andrews.
