Donny van de Beek sustains serious setback, after blaming Man Utd spell for injury struggles

Donny van de Beek hoped his move to Girona would see him play regular football, but a year on from joining the La Liga club, he has suffered a serious injury.

It is no secret that Donny van de Beek flopped at Manchester United.

The former United and Ajax midfielder rediscovered his love for football when he made 35 appearances for Girona last season. Whereas during his time at United, Van de Beek made just six Premier League starts.

United have had midfield issues for years, and Van de Beek contributed to those.

It marked a significant improvement for a player who was overlooked at United from the moment he arrived at Old Trafford.

The Netherlands international endured several different injuries during his time at United, after costing the club £35 million in 2020.

Van de Beek was also sent on loan twice during his time at United, after joining Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt before securing a permanent switch to Girona.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer didn’t appear to rate Van de Beek at United, while Erik ten Hag gave him starts in three consecutive games in 2022.

In Spain, he got off to the perfect start in terms of getting regular, but the midfielder has suffered a fresh setback, which will derail his progression.

Donny van de Beek injury ‘looks bad’

Van de Beek played in Girona’s La Liga clash against Athletic Club.

The former United midfielder appears to have suffered a fresh injury setback that has caused concern for Girona manager Michel Sanchez.

Sanchez admitted after Girona’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Club that Van de Beek’s injury ‘looks bad’.

“We’ll see after the tests, but it could be the worst news of the match,” Sanchez said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

The same report claims that some reports suggest initial scans indicate that Van de Beek has a serious injury to his Achilles tendon, just the day he was returning to the starting line-up after more than four months out due to another injury.

Injuries still appear to be holding Van de Beek back from playing regularly. He had similar issues at United, Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Van de Beek blamed Man Utd for injuries

At the end of last season, Van de Beek had another injury to deal with, as mentioned above.

Van de Beek was forced to undergo surgery on his Achilles in May.

Speaking to SPORTBible, a week after the surgery, Van de Beek said: “I’ve had this Achilles issue for a while and kept playing through it, but it got too much in the end.”

He added: “It’s difficult to build rhythm and confidence when you’re constantly being sidelined.

“It’s hard to be at your best when you’re in and out of the team, and I think when you’re not playing regularly.

“Your body isn’t used to the intensity and you become more prone to injuries. The lack of consistent minutes didn’t help either.”
