Inside Man United's transfer plans and how Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have boosted the squad

Manchester United have already spent more than £130m in the transfer window but are yet to add a new striker to their squad.

Cunha and Mbeumo head out for training

Manchester United’s first session at the Chicago Fire’s training facility, the Endeavor Health Performance Center, ran to a lengthy two-and-a-half hours on Wednesday morning.

It was around an hour shorter on Thursday and the team have not done any double sessions (yet). Players who do not play or only get a handful of minutes against West Ham United in New Jersey on Saturday are scheduled to go through an on-pitch post-match training session. A similar session took place in Stockholm after United’s drab draw with Leeds on Saturday.

A section of United’s session on Friday will be visible to the public but will take place at Soldier Field, the Fire’s stadium, rather than at their training base. Ruben Amorim and Matheus Cunha will attend a pre-match press conference at the stadium afterwards.

United sources say that early impressions of Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have been positive. The pair have been described as good characters who are fitting in well and have "injected new energy" into the squad.

Some United staff members admitted there was a nervousness about whether the £71million deal for Mbeumo would be finalised in time for him to travel on the pre-season tour but Amorim is satisfied with the addition of two high-profile players.

United's training sessions have been observed by director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. “There has been plenty of chat on the sidelines,” an eyewitness confirmed.

Amorim is content with how the squad is shaping up and nothing imminent is expected on the striker front. United's plans for that position were kiboshed when Liam Delap opted to join Chelsea in May.

A mooted move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has also been given short shrift. United do not want to inflate their wage bill and Martinez signed a lucrative new contract with Villa last year worth upwards of £200,000-a-week.

United are far from ruling out a move for a new goalscorer and will assess what is possible. The departure of Marcus Rashford on a season-long loan has given them more headroom to finance a move but outright sales are essential. United want to obtain fees for wingers Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony.

Juventus are interested in Sancho but United have fielded more enquiries for Garnacho.
