Cameron Norrie earns Novak Djokovic meeting after beating Francisco Comesana

Cameron Norrie became the first British man to reach the third round of this US Open with a four-set win over Argentine Francisco Comesana.

After enjoying an impressive year in the majors, Norrie beat Comesana 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 7-6 (0-7), 7-6 (7-4).

Having followed a professional career largely spent in the shadow of Sir Andy Murray, Norrie has been one of the top British performers in the majors this year, reaching the fourth round of the French Open and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after a first-round exit in Australia.

Known for exasperating his opponents with conversations with his box, in a manner that has previously frustrated both Frances Tiafoe and Nicholas Jarry, Norrie will be looking to cause problems for Novak Djokovic in the third round.

The former world No 1 has got the better of Norrie in all six of their meetings, from their first encounter at the ATP Finals in 2021, to Roland Garros earlier this year. On only two occasions – the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2021, and Geneva this year – has Norrie managed to even win a set.

But the US Open of 2025 has not yet seen the best of 24-time major winner Djokovic who has dominated the sport for more than a decade.

Instead, Djokovic looked distinctly out of sorts in his first-round match with Learner Tien, and his second-round meeting with Zachary Svajda.

Under the lights of the Arthur Ashe Stadium on the opening day of the tournament and decked in all black, Djokovic appeared to be struggling for breath against Tien. Although the match might have ended with a straight-sets win, the contest was a lot closer at times than the scoreline might suggest.

It was a similar story against Svajda. Djokovic admitted he did not feel “that great” about his tennis, in a result that was heavily affected by Svajda sustaining an injury affecting his performance.

However, despite concerns Djokovic may not be the player he once was, he will be a significant challenge for Norrie.

Despite impressing in the grand slams in 2025, it has not been the most straightforward few weeks for Norrie, who has had to deal with more time off than might have been expected due to early exits at tournaments.

Instead, he has used his alma mater the Texas Christian University as a training base during the US-swing, and spent time away from the tennis court playing volleyball alongside his physio and some current students as he prepared for New York.

While recent results in the United States and Canada might not have gone his way, Norrie looked in impressive form against Comesana, who struggled to impose himself at the start of the match.

“The atmosphere was unreal, from the Argentinians, and there was a lot of support for me as well,” Norrie said.

“It felt like a football match and he was a tricky player.”

Comesana, an Argentine who announced himself on the world stage at Wimbledon in 2024, when he knocked out sixth seed Andrey Rublev in his first appearance at a major, has struggled to maintain that form.

In the match itself, Norrie eased to establish a two-set lead before Comesana fought back to go a break up in the third to take it to a fourth, where it was eventually decided by a third tie break of the game.

It was brilliant and fair play to his opponent, he never let his head drop and he was close to making it a fifth. “He certainly took me by surprise. When he goes back and analyses the numbers, he was winning 70 per cent when he was coming up to the net, and it is something he can come back and repeat; he was very strong. “For Norrie to put out that performance, he will revel in this and take so much confidence from getting the job done.”

There was plenty of support for Comesana and the Argentinian fans were pretty vocal. Moments after the conclusion of the match, Norrie has gone over to a section that was supporting his opponent and handed them a towel. Terrific sportsmanship from Norrie. Bravo!

Comesana serves first in this tie-break but he finds the net so it is an early advantage to Norrie, who has the next two serves. Comesana hits back, winning the first point on the Norrie serve to draw level at 1-1.

A loose forehand from Comesana allows Norrie to take a 2-1 lead. Another stunning rally ensues, with Comesana desperately scrapping, but Norrie wins it with a smash at the net. Comesana then finds the net and Norrie has a commanding 4-1 lead with two serves to come.

Norrie should easily go 5-1 up but somehow butchers a forehand. Comesane hits the net once more and Norrie goes 5-2 up.

Norrie’s return from the Comesana serve goes long. 5-3. Another brilliant bit of work from Comesana and it is now 5-4. Will Norrie regret not going 5-1 up?

A stunning serve down the middle at exactly the moment Norrie needed. 6-4 and the Briton has two match points.

Another ace seals it! Norrie is through to the third round, where he will meet Novak Djokovic. Plenty of emotion in that celebration after four hours of blood, sweat and tears.

Comesana wins the point at the net and has another set point. Comesana has been far better at the net than Norrie today. The Argentinian thought he had won the set with a backhand shot down the line but it went out.

Next point goes the way of Norrie. 30-15 to the Briton. But, as you could have predicted, Comesana is going nowhere as Norrie goes wide and it is all square at 30-30.

How big a moment is that? Norrie goes long and Comesana has a break point. Norrie finds the net and is broken. Norrie has gone from 4-1 up in this set to 5-5.

Another poor bit of play from Norrie coming to the net is costly and Comesana is now 6-0 up.

Having just broken the Comesana serve, Norrie did not need a double fault at the start of this game. Comesana then thinks for a moment he is about to go 0-30 up but Norrie wins the point with a backhand cross-court.

Once more, Norrie comes to the net but hits the ball into it. Norrie probably needs to reduce the number of times he comes to the net as he is not having much success doing so.

Norrie finds the net once more and Comesana has the chance to break straight back, which he does, meaning Comesana will serve for the set again.

Comesana had raced 30-0 up on serve but Norrie is fighting back and scrapping to stay in this set. At 30-30, Comesana suffers a double fault and this is Norrie’s chance. However Comesana’s serve delivers when he needs it and takes it to deuce.

Norrie now has another break point. Can he take this one? No he cannot. He tried to lob Comesana, who had come to the net, but there was not enough on it and Comesana wins with a smash. Norrie will regret that, especially if Comesana sees out the game and therefore the set.

However it is another double fault from Comesana and a third break point of the game is coming up for Norrie. It is not third-time lucky for Norrie as Comesana nails a forehand winner.

A fourth break-point opportunity for Norrie now as Comesana goes long and this time takes it. We are all square at 5-5 in this third set.

Comesana then sends down a stunning ace down the middle and he will not give this game up easily. However he finds the net at the end of a long rally and Norrie has two break points. Norrie broke Comesana’s serve previously and he does so again here to take a commanding lead in this second set.

That is the best shot of the match. Comesana thinks he has won the point with a forehand, but somehow Norrie gets across to his left to send a forehand down the line to set up another break point, which this time he takes at the end of a long rally.

Comesana hits back, winning the next points on his serve which includes an ace to go 2-1 up.

We continue on serve as Norrie wins consecutive points, which also includes an ace, and the Briton is now 3-2 up.

You probably know what I am going to say. Comesana wins back-to-back points with an ace in there and he is now 4-3 up.

This sounds a little repetitive but, you guessed it, Norrie wins both points on his serve and he is now ahead at 5-4.

How big a moment is that? At 5-5, Comesana loses the first point on serve in this tie-break and Norrie now, on serve has set point.

And there is the set to Norrie as his forehand winner is just in, and I mean just in by the tiniest of margins. The first set goes Norrie’s way.

Having just broken Comesana’s serve, Norrie is now under huge pressure on his own serve as Comesana goes 15-40 up courtesy of a backhand winner down the line. However Norrie bounces back by winning the next two points to bring the game level at deuce.

Norrie then wins the next two points and the game is sealed with a lovely forehand down the line. He came from 15-40 down in that game and saved two break points.

Novak Djokovic has won over on Arthur Ashe and he will face the winner of this match in the third round.

Norrie would love to break back and Comesana begins with a double fault. Norrie then goes 0-30 up after a sublime piece of play. He sprints to his left and just gets to the ball before it bounces. On the slide, he manages to get a forehand over the net and across the court to win the point.

Comesana then goes long and now it is Norrie who has the break points. The Briton cannot take the first and is unable to take the first. Will he spurn all three break points? Yes he does and we are back to deuce. Norrie will kick himself as that was the break chance he was after having been broken himself.

He does though have another after a smashed winner at the net. This time he takes it and has a break back.

We have the first review of the match. At 0-15 down, Norrie goes for a drop shot and Comesana is struggling to get there. He gets the return over before Norrie’s return then goes long. However Norrie does not think Comesana hit the ball before it bounced for a second time. The umpire takes a long look at a number of replays and we can clearly see Comesana did manage to get there. What a terrific effort by Comesana to get there but Norrie will be annoyed at himself for how nonchalantly he played his return as he thought the ball had bounced twice before Comesana hit it. That review took a while and was as bad as VAR is in football, although the right decision was come to in the end, despite the length of time it took.

Norrie then goes long and Comesana has three break points. Norrie saves the first of those but Comesana takes the second.

Jack Draper has withdrawn from the US Open with an unspecified injury. “I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US Open,” Draper posted on social media. “I tried my very best to be here and give myself the every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become to much and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support.” In his first-round win over Federico Gomez, Draper was clearly hampered by a bone bruise on his left humerus that affected his serve. He had not played a singles match since Wimbledon because of the injury and the day before his second-round US Open match against Zizou Bergs, decided to withdraw.

Norrie aims to make third round

Cameron Norrie continues his US Open campaign as he takes on Argentinian Francisco Comesana in the second round. Norrie overcame American Sebastian Korda in round one on Monday; Norrie won the first two sets before Korda was forced to retire. Speaking after that win over Korda, Norrie admitted to the nerves he was experiencing ahead of his first-round match.

“I was very nervous for the match,” he said afterwards. “Playing a grand slam match at 11am... trying to get rice down at 10am is not easy! I was nervous but prepared really well. I had the chance to rest and I had a solid match, so I am happy to get through. It was really cool to walk out on to court today [Monday] and see a packed stadium at 11am. I was smiling to see so much support here.”

Norrie has steadily got better in the slams this year. Having gone out in the first round at the start of the year at the Australian Open, he reached the fourth round at the US Open before making the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. His best result at the US Open came in 2022, when he reached the fourth round.

For Comesana, he came from one set down against American Alex Michelsen to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to book his place in the second round. The 24-year-old Argentinian reached the third round at the US Open last year but this is the first time this year he has made it past the first round at a grand slam. In the build-up to this tournament, Comesana had a decent enough run at the Cincinnati Open on the hard courts, making it to the round of 16 where he lost to Andrey Rublev.
