Liverpool opens Marc Guehi transfer talks as double signing in the works

Liverpool has held initial talks with Marc Guehi as it eyes up a deal for the Crystal Palace captain this summer.

Guehi has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield throughout the summer, although there have been doubts over whether the Reds would make a move for him now or wait until next year.

The England international has just one year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, meaning he would be available for free next summer if no other team made a move for him beforehand, or if he decided against signing a new contract with the Eagles.

According to BBC Sport though, Liverpool is looking at signing Guehi before the current window ends on September 1. The Reds are said to be stepping up their attempts, having held talks with the defender.

Palace is claimed to want $54 million (£40M), having turned down a bid worth up to $88 million (£65M) from Newcastle last year. Liverpool, though, wants to pay less than that.

Instead, The Times’ Paul Joyce suggests that a deal could be done for around $40.5M to $47M, including add-ons, with talks underway between the two clubs.

The report also claims that the Reds are trying to sign Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. The 18-year-old is not seen as a potential rival to Guehi, rather an option for the future.

Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted following the Community Shield on Sunday - which saw Guehi come up against Liverpool - that the club could sell its prize asset in order to avoid losing him for nothing next year.

Asked whether Guehi would leave if a suitable proposal was offered, Parish told reporters: "Yes, yes.

"Of course, for players of that calibre to leave on a free, it is a problem for a football club. There is no doubt about it, unfortunately.

“Joachim [Andersen] went and we couldn't afford to lose both of them. We then had another bid in January but that was a difficult decision as well. We will just have to see what happens. It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind."

Liverpool.com says: That will be music to the ears of a lot of Liverpool fans. Not just because the Reds could be getting a great defender in Guehi who will be ready to step into the fold when needed, but also because they're planning for the future with Leoni.

If they can get both of those in, then that just leaves one piece of the puzzle missing - Alexander Isak.
