This was the most hyped season opener in the 104-year history of Ohio Stadium. A crowd of 107,524 was on hand on a beautifully sunny 70 degree day.

Texas was gunning for revenge after Ohio State took a 28-14 win over the Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl/College Football Playoff national semifinal last January in Arlington, Texas.

Ohio State used a 13-play, 80-yard scoring drive to go up 7-0 on C.J. Donaldson's 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. The Buckeyes then extended it to 14-0 on Julian Sayin's 40-yard TD toss to Carnell Tate in the fourth quarter.

Texas' Arch Manning hit Parker Livingstone with a 32-yard TD pass to cut it to 14-7 with 3:28 left in the game.

The Ohio State defense stopped the Texas offense on fourth down four times, including a goal line stand in the third quarter and a pair of fourth-down incompletions in the fourth.

Sayin, a redshirt freshman, made his first career start at quarterback. Sayin, who threw 16 passes in a mop-up role in four games last year, ended up 13 of 20 passing for 126 yards with a touchdown.

According to reports, Sayin became the first quarterback in at least 20 years to make his debut as a starter against the No. 1 team and come away with a win. The last 18 quarterbacks who tried that came away unsuccessful.

Texas had held Ohio State All-American wide receiver Jeremiah Smith to one catch for 3 yards in the playoff game last year. Smith was able to get free for six catches for 43 yards. Tate had two catches for 49 yards.

Donaldson had 19 carries for 67 yards, while James Peoples had 10 carries for 20 yards.

Ohio State won despite being outgained 336-203 in total yardage by Texas. The sophomore Manning, making his third career start as he takes over from departed starter Quinn Ewers, ended up 17 of 30 passing for 170 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

OSU cornerback Jermaine Mathews made that pick late in the third quarter to stop a Texas threat.

Ohio State will welcome in Grambling from the FCS ranks next Saturday (3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network). Grambling, which was 5-7 last year, opens against Langston on Saturday.
