Steven Gerrard has already told Newcastle United what they need to know on Jacob Ramsey deal

Gerrard helped develop Ramsey during his time in charge at Aston Villa

As Newcastle United close in on the signing of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, a reminder has emerged of just how talented the midfielder is and how far he could go at St James' Park.

Ramsey will arrive on Tyneside with a substantial price tag of around £40m, but with little fanfare from some supporters after a difficult couple of years at Villa Park.

The former England under-21 international burst on the scene in 2021 and went on to pick up Villa's young player of the season award in successive campaigns as he established himself as a key member of the first team. Injury then struck and he missed a large slice of the 2023-24 season.

A total of 46 games last year suggests he was back to playing a key part in the Villa team, but a large number of appearances came off the bench.

Trusted and valued by Unai Emery, he wasn't the starting force he previously was. Villa's hope of getting the player to sign a new long-term deal suggests their belief in him, belief shared by Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

It was also a belief shared by former Villa manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has previously tipped the 24-year-old to be one of the best players in the country.

Gerrard was hugely impressed by what he saw in Ramsey and previously suggested he would go very far.

"I know the level of the England players, I’ve been around it, and have enough experience to know it’s only a matter of time but let’s all be sensible and keep calm about it," Gerrard said about Ramsey in 2022. "I want him to make his own headlines with his football.

"He is a top talent, I’m loving every moment of working with him. He is getting stronger with each game because we’re giving him the platform to express himself. He is in a wonderful place.

"He will be a terrific player. It won't be long before the whole country is watching him I'm sure. He is right up there let me tell you."
