The Indian cricket board has begun the hunt for a new lead sponsor for its teams after Dream11 withdrew citing the new law passed by the Parliament that makes fantasy gaming platforms based on real money illegal. The deal ended prematurely with nearly a year left after Dream11 signed a three-year contract with the BCCI worth Rs 358 crore in July 2023.

While it will be a challenge for the BCCI to rope in a sponsor before the Asia Cup 2025 gets underway from September 9, the board values the sponsorship for what will be a three-year deal at around Rs 450 crore which is higher than the amount Dream11 was to pay over the course of its three-year contract.

According to a report in NDTV, the BCCI is hoping to onboard a new sponsor from 2025 to 2028 for 140 matches. The contract will be for both home and away bilateral matches in addition to multi-nation tournaments including those organised by the ICC and Asian Cricket Council.

The report adds that for bilateral series, Rs 3.5 crore is the target for each match while Rs 1.5 crore for each game of the ICC and ACC tournaments.

Dream11 Suspends Paid Contests

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was tabled in the Lok Sabha on August 20. It was cleared by both the Houses of Parliament on August 21 before getting Presidential assent on August 23.

Soon after the passage of the bill, Dream11, the leading fantasy gaming platform in India, announced it has suspended paid contests but will continue free-to-play games.

“Unchecked expansion of online money gaming services has been linked to unlawful activities including financial fraud, money-laundering, tax evasion and in some cases, the financing of terrorism, thereby posing threats to national security, public order and the integrity of the State," the Bill stated.
