Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker sets new record for Brazil and eyes another ahead of World Cup

Liverpool players are beginning their preparations for the 2026 World Cup as qualifiers continue this week.

The tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico is now only nine months away, with many Reds players virtually guaranteed of their place.

One player who is almost certain to be playing regularly during the bonanza is Alisson Becker, whose Brazil team secured their passage with a 3-0 win over Chile on Friday morning.

Alisson has not always been secure of his number one shirt with Brazil, with Man City’s Ederson occasionally taking over duties.

But after Ederson joined Fenerbahce, it seems as though the Liverpool goalkeeper has seen off his rival.

The 32-year-old was Carlo Ancelotti’s choice for the win over Chile, and after being given the nod, Alisson duly set a new record for the national team.

Alisson Becker sets Brazil clean sheet record

Although it has now been a decade since Alisson made his debut for Brazil, he has not always shown his Liverpool form while with the national side.

Nevertheless, the £67m keeper has still been a reliable presence through what has not always been a good period for the Selecao.

And that was borne out on Friday, when, as per Globo, Alisson registered his 45th clean sheet on his 75th cap.

This set a new record for the most clean sheets by a Brazilian goalkeeper in the 21st century, surpassing Julio Cesar’s tally of 44.

It is also reported that Alisson can level former Liverpool coach Claudio Taffarel for the most World Cups as Brazilian number one if he keeps the shirt this summer.

2026 would make it three World Cups that Alisson has been the pick between the sticks, matching Taffarel’s run from 1990 to 1998.

Alisson faces former Liverpool academy goalkeeper

While Alisson was setting new records for Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, it was also a big moment for one former Liverpool academy goalkeeper.

On the opposite side of the field to Alisson was Lawrence Vigouroux, who spent two years with the Reds between 2014 and 2016.

Vigouroux never played for Liverpool, but having established himself as the starting goalkeeper for Swansea City, he made his senior debut for Chile on Friday.

The 31-year-old was born in Camden, London and aside from a brief stint for Chilean team Everton de Vina del Mar, has spent his whole career in the English Football League.
