Linfield boss Healy frustrated by ref calls at Tolka

Linfield manager David Healy was left bemused and frustrated by the performance of Greek referee Vassilis Fotias during his team's 3-1 loss to Shelbourne in the Conference League play-off first leg at Tolka Park last night.

The game's big talking point was the 20th-minute dismissal of Matthew Fitzpatrick, who caught Milan Mbeng late and high as he attempted to control a long ball.

It looked unintentional, if reckless, but Fotias reached for his back pocket.

Fotias also awarded Shels a penalty when Harry Wood's cross hit a sliding Kyle McClean's hand, and gave Paddy Barrett just a yellow after his handball led to a Linfield spot-kick in the second half. Healy claimed both decisions were wrong.

"I think a lot of that is down to the officials if I'm being honest," he said when asked about the chaotic nature of the contest.

"Without blaming the officials, I don’t want to be sitting here blaming, I thought one or two decisions, one or two moments, were created by the officials.

"The red card… I heard a lot about intentional, letter of the law, rules. Mathew Fitzpatrick does not see, was it Mbeng he catches? Yeah he catches him but there’s completely zero intention to hurt the player.

"He’s looking the opposite way. He’s caught him but he’s going to stick his foot out because he’s trying to receive the ball. As soon as he turns around to receive the ball there’s a collision. I don’t think the referee gives himself enough time to think about it. He makes the decision very, very swiftly."

When asked he if felt the officials were perhaps out of their depth, Healy replied: "Oh no, no. I don’t think they were out of their depth. The Greek level of football is of a high level, I just thought there were decisions that potentially if given a bit more consideration to, might have been a wee bit more beneficial to my side.

"Ben Hall, was it Mipo he fouled (for Shels' second penalty of the nightt)? He caught him inside the box? That’s a penalty. I thought Kyle McClean’s one before that when Mipo missed the penalty, pfft.

"I watch so many football games and European football and I am mystified and baffled by some of the decisions that are given for handball these days.

"Kyle McClean is sliding in to block a challenge. What does he want to him to do? Do you practice in training sliding under a small tent or a small slide and keep your arms in? It’s impossible.

"Then on the other side, did Paddy Barrett stop an intentional goal on the line? Is it a red card? Did Paddy Barrett stop an intentional goal? Did he? So the consistency, I’m talking about the level of consistency.

"From where I was and the angle I have seen, it looks as if Paddy Barrett has intentionally put his hand up to stop Sam Roscoe scoring and equalising."

"No matter what's going to happen next week it is absolutely paramount we score the first goal"

Linfield were beaten by Shels in the Champions League first round qualifiers back in July. Then, they were still in pre-season. Now, they look much better conditioned and did offer enough evidence in Dublin to suggest they can make a real go of turning this tie around at Windsor Park next week

"What we didn't do against Shelbourne the last time at Windsor was get the first goal," added Healy.

"No matter what's going to happen next week it is absolutely paramount we score the first goal.

"Are we better equipped? Physically, yeah I think we are. Obviously the challenge then becomes for us, if the game becomes too open after 25, 30, 40 minutes in the first half, Shels will pick you off.

"We'll not be gung-ho, chasing after ten, 15 minutes. We'll try and build into the game like we did the last time, and hopefully if the opportunities arise, the half-chances that we missed last time, we take them.

"If we need to open up after an hour, 70 minutes I'll look at the bench and we'll have a right go at it."
