Derek McInnes' bitter 'if that was Rangers or Celtic' tears after Hearts drop points at Tynecastle

Derek McInnes couldn’t help but take a dig at Celtic and Rangers after watching Hearts drop points at Tynecastle.

Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin piled the pressure on Hearts after the Tannadice boss questioned whether or not Derek McInnes’ side could keep up the title race with Celtic.

And it seems Goodwin’s tactic worked after Hearts dropped points in a 1-1 draw as Celtic hammered Kilmarnock to close the gap to seven points at the top of the league.

Reacting to the stalemate with United, McInnes couldn’t help himself as he cried about the lack of time added on at the end as Celtic start to breathe down Hearts’ neck.

The Hearts boss has watched his team offer up a challenge to Celtic this season and was looking good with a nine-point lead before today.

Now with just seven points and a game in hand to Celtic to go, McInnes sounds like he’s starting to feel the pressure after another draw sees the gap close further.

McInnes told BBC Radio Scotland, “We just lacked a wee bit of quality and we needed to stay calm. We were a wee bit excitable at times.

“We played last five-minute football for the majority of the second half. We just needed a wee bit more trust in what we do.

“The decisions were right from the referee, other than the three minutes injury time. That was madness.

“We were constantly speaking to him about it. There should have been more.

“If that was Celtic or Rangers at the top of the league, there would have been a lot more than three minutes I can tell you that.”

With a two-week international break now kicking in, McInnes has a fortnight to stew about Celtic as he ponders bringing his Hearts team to Parkhead next month.
