David Ornstein: Liverpool Want to Sign England 'Superstar' This Summer

Liverpool remain keen on signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi this summer, journalist David Ornstein has revealed.

The Premier League winners would reportedly be open to signing the England international ‘at the right price’ and are among several English clubs monitoring his situation.

Tottenham, who submitted a bid for Guehi in January, are also believed to have retained their interest, while Palace have a difficult decision on their hands.

Oliver Glasner’s side risk losing Guehi for free next summer if he is not sold, as the 24-year-old has less than a year left on his Selhurst Park deal.

Ornstein, speaking on Back Pages Tonight, has revealed that Palace would be looking to cash in on Guehi rather than risk losing him for free next summer amid interest from Liverpool:

“We know Liverpool are keen on him at the right price. Reports today suggest Tottenham, who made a bid for him in January, don't forget, are still in the mix too. “I think Palace would be looking to cash in rather than face losing him for free next summer, but he's got the power in his hands. “He's very happy at Crystal Palace, by the sounds of it, and I don't think he'd be afraid to go to the end of his deal. It doesn't seem like a new contract is on the agenda. “And I think Marc Guehi, with total respect to Crystal Palace, is going to be playing at the very top of Champions League football, whether it's sooner or later, and so, yeah, you suspect this is going to be one of the stories of the upcoming weeks of the transfer window.”

Guehi was linked with a Selhurst Park exit in the last two transfer windows and was a target for Newcastle last summer.

Palace were reluctant to part ways with their captain at the time, with chairman Steve Parish stating that any club wanting to sign ‘superstar’ Guehi would have to pay ‘superstar money’.

Liverpool are set to announce Hugo Ekitike’s arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt this week, after agreeing a deal worth £79m for the 23-year-old Frenchman.

Ekitike is expected to sign a six-year contract with the Reds and will push Liverpool’s spending past £250m this summer.
