Football Finance Expert Explains if Liverpool Can Afford to Sign Alexander Isak

A football finance expert has explained whether Liverpool can afford to sign Alexander Isak or not this summer after the striker was valued at £130m. The Reds enjoyed a stellar campaign during Arne Slot's first year with the club, winning the Premier League title for just the second time ever and they've wasted little time strengthening their squad ahead of next season.

While they've lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, Liverpool have already added Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz to their ranks, giving them an incredible chance to hold onto their crown at the top of the Premier League. It appears they aren't finished, though, with recent reports suggesting they're keen on adding Newcastle United's Isak to their lineup too.

The Swedish striker wouldn't come cheap, with a valuation of £130m and with how much Liverpool have already spent this summer, a finance expert has now explained whether they can actually afford him or not.

It's never going to be easy signing a player of Isak's calibre. He arrived in the Premier League in 2022 and he has been a revelation for Newcastle. He's scored 62 times in 109 games for the Magpies and it's hardly surprising to see Liverpool take an interest. With a steep asking price, though, it will take a lot to lure him away from St. James' Park.

Speaking to BBC, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed that while he'd be an expensive signing, Liverpool still have plenty of wiggle room with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and can afford to splash out on Isak. So far this summer, they've spent over £170m, but considering their low spending in previous windows, they're well within the PSR rules which limit clubs' losses over the course of three years to £105m. Maguire said:

"Liverpool are a super smart football club. They're in an incredibly strong PSR position. Out of the traditional big six clubs, they've spent the least in this three-year cycle - only £325m - and that includes their signing of Florian Wirtz. "They've still got plenty of wiggle room with their transfer budget. Plus, a move for a striker is likely to be paid in instalments, meaning the cost can be spread over multiple seasons."

He's not the only striker on their radar, however. Should Liverpool fail to land Isak, they've already drawn up a shortlist of other targets to pursuit in their quest to sign a new leading man.
