Arne Slot told by Don Hutchison which position will get the best out of Florian Wirtz at Liverpool

Florian Wirtz is closing in on a move to Liverpool that could go down as one of the most exciting in the club’s recent history.

The Bayer Leverkusen maestro is regarded as one of the best young players in world football as Liverpool inch towards signing Wirtz, with the Germany international expected to join the Reds for a club-record fee.

With Liverpool also set to sign Jeremie Frimpong, Arne Slot’s transfer team are working at speeds previously unseen at Anfield in order to get world-class players through the door and settled ahead of pre-season and the new Premier League campaign.

And former Liverpool star Don Hutchison has now noted which position Wirtz should play in Liverpool’s system that will get the best out of the 22-year-old.

Arne Slot urged to play Florian Wirtz as a false nine for Liverpool

Speaking on ESPN FC, the pundit made the claim that Wirtz should be used at Liverpool next season as a false nine, with Hutchison comparing the German to former Anfield stars Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

Hutchison said when asked what Wirtz could bring to Liverpool next season: “When I’ve watched Liverpool at their very best this season, it’s when Luis Diaz has been playing as a false nine, being that link that Firmino was.

“I liken him [Wirtz] to Philippe Coutinho, given the way he plays. I see the signing, and yes, it is a lot of money, but what a signing. He’s got a high footballing IQ, he’s versatile, we’ve seen Szoboszlai as that false nine, so it gives Arne Slot options whether he wants Wirtz as a nine or in a free role.

“He’s a brilliant player, the style that he brings is going to be brilliant for the Premier League, and if you’re going to pigeonhole him in a position in the current Liverpool system, it’s the false nine.”

Firmino is nothing short of a modern Liverpool legend, with the Brazilian international playing an influential role in Jurgen Klopp’s success at Anfield playing as a false nine and getting the best out of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the attacker.

And with Slot now at the helm, the Dutch manager could have his own version of Firmino in Wirtz, with the 22-year-old having the skillset to pull off a similar role and in turn unlock the true potential of this Liverpool attack.

Indeed, Salah and Cody Gakpo have enjoyed club-best seasons with Liverpool this term under Slot, and adding Wirtz to the mix could see the pair become even better in the new campaign, with the Germany international ready to take the Premier Leagye by storm.
