How Patriots’ 2025 NFL Draft capital compares to rest of the league

2
The New England Patriots entered the 2025 offseason off yet another disappointing season with a second straight head coaching change, but they found themselves in a better situation than last year. Not only did they have considerable resources available yet again, they also did not need to spend any of them on the quarterback position.

Sure, there are plenty of holes left all over the roster and addressing them will be key before any talk about getting back into contention. With Drake Maye under center, however, the team now has some theoretical flexibility atop the draft.

What it also has is plenty of general capital to work with. At the moment, the Patriots are the owners of nine total selections starting at No. 4 overall:

Round 1: No. 4

Round 2: No. 38

Round 3: No. 69

Round 3: No. 77 (via Atlanta Falcons)

Round 4: No. 106

Round 5: No. 144

Round 5: No. 171 (via Dallas Cowboys)

Round 7: No. 220

Round 7: No. 238 (via Los Angeles Chargers)

New England’s total number of selections does not stand out compared to other teams in the NFL — they are tied for 10th in that specific category — but there is a difference between quantity and quality when it comes to the value of draft capital. Every single first-round pick, for example, is worth more than all the seventh-round selections combined; having a shot at some of the elite talent in the class carries far more weight than having the ability to bring a boatload of possible replacement-level players.

The Patriots’ current draft capital is spread out relatively evenly, with five of their nine selections falling into what can be considered the “roster lock” zone — i.e. picks in the first four rounds that are virtually guaranteed to make the opening day team barring injury. This gives the club some good flexibility and capital to work with.

In fact, New England’s portfolio ranks near the top of the league regardless which value chart you look at:

Even though the different draft charts use a different methodology to calculate value, all of the five listed above have the Patriots in the same general range near the top of the table.

The player value chart created by Pro Football Focus (PFF) has New England at No. 3. The other three, including the trade value charts by Pats Pulpit’s own Rich Hill, see the Patriots’ draft capital as the fourth most valuable in the league. Regardless of how you look at it, the team of head coach Mike Vrabel and de facto general manager Eliot Wolf is in a comfortable spot.

Of course, a lot can and will change over the next few days. Every selection and trade made by New England or other clubs will have an impact on the remaining capital. For the moment, though, the Patriots are in a good position as far as the total value of their draft is concerned.

If they want to manipulate the board to their liking, they are in a better position than other clubs to do so. As a result, they have a golden opportunity to add some much needed talent to their roster and be decisive with their moves.
