Novak Djokovic suffered a shock loss to Valentin Vacherot in the Shanghai Masters semi-final, but the Monégasque player is not the lowest-ranked player to defeat the Serbian in 2025.

Djokovic appeared to suffer from a glute injury in the Shanghai Masters semi-final and Vacherot made the 24-time Grand Slam champion pay.

Vacherot was stunned to beat Djokovic as he continued his remarkable run in Shanghai, which has seen him beat Holger Rune, Tallon Griekspoor, and Tomas Machac.

Despite the star starting the tournament with a rank outside the top 200, Vacherot is still not the lowest-ranked player to topple Djokovic in 2025.

Reilly Opelka is still the lowest-ranked player to beat Novak Djokovic in 2025

Djokovic has suffered a myriad of shock losses in 2025, including to World No. 44 Matteo Arnaldi and World No. 85 Botic van de Zandschulp.

However, Djokovic’s most shocking loss came right at the beginning of the year at the 2025 Brisbane Masters.

Djokovic’s first tournament of the season in Australia saw him defeat Rinky Hijikata and Gael Monfils, before he came up against World No. 293 Reilly Opelka in the quarter-final.

The Serbian was stunned by the giant American, who defeated the tennis icon in a convincing straight sets victory.

Djokovic has become far more beatable in the latter stages of his career, as exhibited by his recent loss to Vacherot.

The star also lost to World No. 123 Luca Nardi at Indian Wells in 2024, which was at the time his lowest-ranked loss.

Is Novak Djokovic’s season over?

Djokovic was arguably gifted his best chance to win a final ATP-1000 tournament, which makes his loss to Vacherot even more upsetting.

The Serbian did not play a single player ranked in the ATP top 20, but a fusion of the conditions and his aging body let him down in Shanghai.

It would not be a surprise to see Djokovic end his 2025 season now and miss the Paris Masters and the ATP Tour Finals.
