Manchester United transfer news: Why Emiliano Martinez move was "impossible" as Ruben Amorim set for Senne Lammens boost

Manchester United were thought to be keen on bringing in Emiliano Martinez, but a report claims that a current Red Devils player was key in preventing the move.

Manchester United have moved on from Emiliano Martinez due to Jadon Sancho's refusal to make a permanent switch to Aston Villa, the latest report has claimed.

United have been busy on transfer deadline day, with the club agreeing a deal with Royal Antwerp to bring in goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The shot-stopper is expected to claim the number one spot ahead of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, who have both failed to impress.

While Lammens is set to join, the Red Devils were thought to be keen on bringing in Aston Villa number one Emiliano Martinez, and speculation about his potential switch to United ramped up after he was left out of his team's squad that lost against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that while a deal that would have seen Martinez move to Old Trafford was discussed for £25m, Sancho's refusal to move permanently to Villa Park for the same fee scuppered any hopes of a deal to sign the goalkeeper.

Why Senne Lammens is better for Manchester United than Emiliano Martinez

Martinez has proven himself on the world stage, winning one World Cup and two Copa America's with Argentina.

The goalkeeper was also key to Aston Villa's rise from relegation candidates to regular European contenders, but he will be 33 on September 2, and there is a real risk of decline.

Lammens is 23 and only has one full season of top-flight football in Belgium under his belt, but his youthful age means that he could feasibly be United's first-choice goalkeeper for a number of years.

Though the step up to Premier League football could be steep, United are already in the middle of a rebuild, so perhaps now is the perfect time for Lammens to join and iron out his flaws.

Has Ruben Amorim cleared problematic players this summer transfer window?

Ruben Amorim has been able to rid the squad of a number of players that he deemed surplus to requirement, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho leaving the club this summer.

The latter's relationship had soured with the United boss, and he was seen by many as a potential distraction in the dressing room.

Sancho's relationship with the Red Devils had also deteriorated, and with the forward having just one year left on his contract, a loan to Aston Villa would spell the end of his time at Old Trafford.

There is hope that the exits of players such as Sancho and Garnacho can help create a more harmonious environment at the club, but Amorim will still have to deliver on the pitch if he is to avoid further scrutiny.
