Ruben Amorim believes every Manchester United player could perform better amid the club’s inconsistent season. The Portuguese coach has struggled to have an impact at Old Trafford since his arrival.

Their inconsistency continued on Sunday afternoon with a 0-0 draw against local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford. It leaves the Red Devils sitting 13th in the Premier League table - meaning their only route into the Champions League for next season would be by claiming victory in the Europa League.

Amorim has only won six out of his 20 Premier League games this season. And despite the United boss claiming that there has been development within the team since his appointment, he has sent a clear message to each of his players - that they need to improve.

Speaking after Sunday’s game, he said: "You can see it, [same] as me, the team is more comfortable. The positions, we can make better connections, we are pushing the opponents sometimes to the last third.

“We are defending and blocking the talented players like Manchester City have. I think we blocked most of the chances; they didn't create much. They had the ball, but without danger, so we are improving."

"We have so many aspects to improve. Everywhere we need to improve in every aspect, build up, transition, decisions in the final third,” Amorim added. “Every player can improve, they are here because they showed something at other clubs. They have the quality, we are still a team that plays on transition, we need to spend more time in final third to have more opportunities."

United will now turn their attentions to their Europa League campaign with a quarter-final clash with Lyon to come. And Amorim has not played down how crucial the tie could be for his side and the remainder of the campaign.

He said: “It's really important. Again, it's not the most important thing for Manchester United because we have a lot of things to do, but you can see it, in this season, the Europa League is really important. We can reach the Champions League next season, we can win something, so we are going to do everything to try to go to the next stage."

Following the clash with Lyon United’s next assignment in the league pits them against Newcastle - who themselves are chaing Champions League football - next weekend. The Red Devils travel to St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
