Jamie Carragher Sends Savage ‘115 Charges’ Post After Man City vs Dortmund

Former Liverpool and England centre-back Jamie Carragher, who has turned his hand at being one of football's most divisive pundits in his post-playing career, has hit back at a report that exclusively revealed that Manchester City turned down his desire to join the Borussia Dortmund fans in the away end by referring to the 115 charges the Premier League club are currently facing.

Back in 2024, Carragher – who spent his entire 737-match club career with Liverpool – famously spent a night rubbing shoulder-to-shoulders with fans of Die Schwarzgelben in Dortmund's yellow wall in their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, a fixture which the Bundesliga outfit triumphed 1-0 in thanks to a 36th-minute goal from Niclas Fullkrug.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Manchester City have now won 20 and lost none of their last 23 home group stage/league phase games in the Champions League.

Recently, as Dortmund travelled to Manchester in pursuit of three points, Carragher was keen to rekindle that unforgettable relationship with the Signal Iduna Park faithful by cheering them on inside the Etihad Stadium. As far as he got, however, was marching with the travelling contingent from the city centre to the stadium in east Manchester as the home side rejected his proposal.

Referring to City's 4-1 win over Dortmund, the Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan exclusively revealed that Carragher wanted to join the German fans in the away end – but the 47-year-old Liverpool hero was stopped from doing so amid concerns the move could prove incendiary. The English side's victory was thanks to goals from Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki.

According to Keegan's report, Pep Guardiola-managed City took a dim view and rejected a request from CBS Sports. Although both UEFA – European football's governing body – and City refused to comment on the matter, it was reported that both were quick to turn down Carragher's proposal.

The view of UEFA centred around the fact the pundit's media credentials did not stretch to him swapping the press area for the stands. Elsewhere, the club were of the belief the presence of Carragher – formerly of Liverpool for his entire career – in the away end would not have been a clever decision and, as a result, could've caused a problem.

As evidenced below, Carragher fully embraced the Dortmund culture last May:

Alongside that, the prospect of Carragher – who is widely regarded as one of the greatest centre-backs in the history of the Premier League – interviewing the home players after bouncing around in the away end of the Etihad Stadium seemed unsavoury.

Keegan, who exclusively revealed the news one day after City's resounding win on home soil, took to X (formerly Twitter) – and Carragher was quick to respond, complaining that he went to City, rather than the defender-turned-pundit himself, for the news. He also referenced the fact that his reporting regarding City's 115 charges case has been 'so sympathetic'.

"Just trying to have a good time with the Dortmund fans Mike, it was no problem it wasn't allowed. Next time message me & I'll tell you all you need to know, rather than Simon at Man City giving you a story. Probably explains why you're so sympathetic around the 115 charges."

City, as well-documented, have been accused of 115 alleged breaches of financial regulations between 2009, one year following their Sheikh Mansour-led takeover, and 2018. Across that period, the Premier League outfit won the Premier League titles on three separate occasions – 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2017/18.

While joining the Dortmund fans on the route to the stadium, Carragher was issued a scarf dedicated to the Bundesliga side – and he even joined in with some of their club chants. Handed beers as if it was going out of fashion, he said: "It's been fantastic. We had a great walk in from Manchester city centre to the ground. They're enjoying themselves, they're looking forward to the game and a little bit worried about Erling Haaland.

"But they've got their own man up front in (Serhou) Guirassy who we think might be able to cause a problem or two," the proud Liverpudlian said before adding, "They're in full flight and hopefully, by the end of the game they're going to really enjoy themselves and I might join them."
