Bruno Fernandes is refusing to allow Ruben Amorim's change to diminish his relentless output for Man Utd

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is celebrating recently scoring his 100th goal for the club.

In the pouring rain against Chelsea, Bruno Fernandes beat the last man to latch onto a header across the box and direct the ball into the back of the net.

It was a special moment for Fernandes, his 100th goal for Manchester United. He entered the season on 98, scoring his 99th from the penalty spot against Burnley.

Fernandes is one of four midfielders to score 100 goals or more for the Red Devils, and managed to do so in the fewest number of games.

Fernandes keeping up high standards

There is a new task for Bruno Fernandes this season. Head coach Ruben Amorim has deployed Fernandes in every game in one of the two deeper midfield roles.

The decision has proven controversial, with Fernandes criticised for lacking ‘defensive DNA’.

But from an attacking perspective, Fernandes is a net positive who is maintaining his consistent high standards, even from a deeper role.

Data provided via Sofascore show how Fernandes’ contribution is on par over the first five Premier League games, when compared with his previous five seasons.

More United News

Fernandes is not typically a fast starter in terms of goals. This is the first time since 2021/22 that he has scored more than one goal in his opening five matches.

While his shots per game are down from last season’s 3.4 to 2.4, he is still contributing higher than the 2.0 shots per game during the start to 2022/23.

Fernandes’ overall match rating of 7.50 per game makes this his joint-third best start to the season in the Premier League, with 2023/24 his most impressive.

Bruno Fernandes’ total numbers could slow down this season

Bruno Fernandes is typically a slow starter. The one exception was his opening day hat-trick in 2021/22 against Leeds, the one and only treble of his Manchester United career.

Last season Fernandes failed to score in his opening five matches and contributed only one assist in this span.

By the end of the season Fernandes had reached 19 goals and 19 assists in all competitions.

Without European football this season, Fernandes would do incredibly well to surpass either tally for goals or assists, from the standpoint that there are fewer games. But on a per game basis, you can bet on him to remain productive.
