Celtic fans stunned by Hoops star despite Ajax thrashing in Como Cup

It’s not what the doctor ordered for Celtic and Brendan Rodgers.

Only over the weekend, Celtic were putting four goals past Newcastle United, and the club’s pre-season preparations were looking shiny and starting to take shape.

But, on Thursday evening, Celtic were thrashed by Ajax in the Como Cup, and it has put a dampener on proceedings heading into that opening Premiership game against St Mirren.

It’s crazy to think that is a week away, because the mood isn’t exactly rosy amongst the Celtic Park faithful, but one man is bringing them all together, and that’s Kieran Tierney.

It’s great to see Tierney back, and he helped produce one of the finest moments of the match, even though Ajax outclassed Celtic in the second half.

After the Dutch giants opened the scoring, Celtic’s returning hero played a sublime through ball to Reo Hatate, who played it across the box to Hyunjun Yang to open the scoring.

That moment of magic from Tierney was highlighted by the supporters on social media, who gave their flowers to the left-back, including how it was ‘world-class.’

Brendan Rodgers’ verdict on Celtic’s defeat to Ajax

After the game, Rodgers mentioned Celtic’s goal and how it was ‘very, very good’, including a strong opening hour from the team.

But that’s when the Celtic manager admitted that the wheels fell off, and there were too many mistakes and lost duels from the side.

Speaking to Celtic TV, Rodgers was pretty honest in his assessment of the match.

“I didn’t think it was quite a 5-1 game,” stated Rodgers post-match. “I thought, for the first 60 minutes of the game, we were very good, and the third goal we gave away.

“We had lots of really good moments. Scored one, and should have had more. The goal we scored was very, very good.

“Then, I just felt, probably in the last 30 minutes of the game, we gave the ball far too easily and we lost out on too many duels.”
