Got one thing right: Man United’s decision on £47m man definitely the right call

Manchester United fans witnessed their club undergo a summer of upheaval, with plenty of signings and exits at the Old Trafford club.

The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last season, with United manager Rubem Amorim under pressure to improve the club’s fortunes in 2025-26.

United signed Benjamin Sesko and other attacking players to add firepower to their ranks in the off-season and will surely be a better team this season than they were in 2024-25.

However, the decision to keep one man at Old Trafford will be critical in helping the Manchester club become competitive again.

Bruno Fernandes still the main man at United

There was plenty of speculation over the future of United captain Bruno Fernandes this summer, but ultimately the club rejected approaches from Saudi Arabian teams for the playmaker.

TBR Football reported in May that United had decided to keep Fernandes, with plenty of interest in the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

United could have made more than the £47 million they spent to sign Fernandes, but made the right decision to keep him.

While the addition of Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha brings star power to Old Trafford, Fernandes undoubtedly remains United’s most-influential and important player.

Unleashing Fernandes’ creativity the key for United

In Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, Fernandes has at times struggled to impact games in the same way he did under predecessor Erik Ten Hag.

For the current United manager, finding a system that makes the Portuguese schemer the attacking focal point can only improve the team’s fortunes.

While Amorim continues to struggle to find a central midfield balance to make the side competitive, further forward the coach needs to find a system that allows Fernandes to play centrally and complement his other attacking options.

It may well be that one of Sesko, Mbuemo or Cunha has to sit out to allow the Portugal international to feature further forward – something that will make United a more dangerous opponent.
