Mohamed Salah has admitted that he's desperate to win the coveted Ballon d'Or, at least for the people of Egypt, after helping Liverpool win the Premier League. The 33-year-old has been shortlisted for the award on five separate occasions since joining the Reds from AS Roma in 2017.

Yet, despite helping Liverpool win the Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, and two Premier League titles, Salah has never ranked higher than fifth spot. However, the Egyptian is expected to rival Barcelona duo Raphinha and Lamine Yamal for the prestigious award later this year after playing a starring role in Liverpool's stunning Premier League triumph last term.

Now, after scooping both the Premier League and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year awards last month, the former Chelsea and AS Roma forward is hopeful he can become just the second African to win the award - and pay homage to his native Egypt.

"That wasn't in my head when I was that young because, when you are playing in the streets of Egypt, you don't see yourself winning the Ballon d'Or," said Salah.

"I think the first time it triggered something in me was when my agent told me I was able to make it.

"I started to really think about it in Liverpool, not in Rome. If I won it, it would be great. If I don't win it, my career will also be really good.

"But I always have that image in my head; I just want to win it for my people, that thing is stuck in my head."
