Controversy in Derry as Slaughtneil appeal result

Slaughtneil have lodged an appeal following their exit from the Derry SFC at the hands of Newbridge in last weekend's county semi-final.

The three-time Ulster football champions were beaten 0-21 to 1-16, with reigning title holders Newbridge due to face Magherafelt in this Sunday's decider.

However, there was bitter controversy over an injury-time score from Shane McGuigan. With the sides level, the All-Star forward curled over a score, which was given as a one-pointer to put Slaughtneil one point clear with time running out.

However, replays threw doubt on whether he was inside or outside the arc, with Slaughtneil protesting that it should have been awarded as two-pointer.

From the next play, Newbridge were awarded a free, which was brought forward 50 metres, with Conor Doherty slotting the two-pointer to put the 2024 champions in front.

Padraig McGrogan added another score to give them a two-point victory.

Slaughtneil, however, have lodged an appeal against the outcome, with a hearing set for Tuesday evening.

Magherafelt overcame 2023-24 All-Ireland champions in Glen in the other semi-final.
