To be fair to the ref Martin McErleane in Sunday’s second Derry senior football semi-final, he had the perfect position, in line with the arc just as Shane McGuigan wound up to kick Slaughneil into the lead as the clock in Owenbeg ticked into injury-time. But it was a one-point lead, not a two-point lead as Slaughtneil argued that it should have been.Within less than a minute, however, they were behind to a two-point free converted by Conor Doherty after McErleane brought forward the ball by 50 metres for an apparent delaying foul on a Newbridge player after the kick-out had been secured.
