Fabrizio Romano shares update on Andre Onana amid Monaco claims, ‘I am told…’

Each time Manchester United get linked with a new goalkeeper, Andre Onana’s future looks more uncertain.

There has been speculation this summer over Manchester United signing a new goalkeeper, after two years of watching Andre Onana struggle as the first choice.

Onana replaced David de Gea between the sticks at Old Trafford in 2023 following a transfer from Inter Milan.

In his first season, the Cameroon international was at fault for several costly mistakes in the Champions League before struggling again in his second season.

It means there are questions about whether Onana is the best-suited goalkeeper for Ruben Amorim’s side, after finishing 15th in the Premier League last term.

United’s back-up option, Altay Bayindir, could leave United in search of regular football this summer. That alone would force Amorim to sign a new stopper in the summer market.

That could see Onana either facing more competition or becoming a casualty.

Andre Onana not in talks with AS Monaco

Although Onana has struggled since moving to the Premier League, the 29-year-old still has a strong reputation in the game following his time at Ajax and Inter Milan.

That means United wouldn’t find it hard to find suitors if they made Onana available.

News emerged this week that Ligue 1 side AS Monaco had expressed interest in a deal for Onana.

However, one respected journalist has dismissed those reports as untrue.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Monaco are not in active talks over a deal to sign Onana even though they are searching for a new keeper.

Romano adds that if Onana was to leave, United would prefer a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez as his replacement.

The Argentine World Cup-winner is understood to be keen on a switch from Villa Park to Old Trafford.

Romano told his YouTube channel: “I am told that Monaco are not in active talks to sign Andre Onana, despite what other reports have suggested. Monaco are looking to sign a keeper but they have not made any approach for Onana.

“If Onana leaves for Saudi or other destinations, then United will try and sign a keeper and they really like Emiliano Martinez who is open to a move even without Champions League football.

“But it all depends on Onana, who is happy at Manchester United and open to staying.”

This means that there is unlikely to be a move made for Martinez unless Onana departs.

Tom Heaton staying

United have decided to give veteran Tom Heaton a new deal rather than let his contract expire.

Heaton was named on United’s official retained list earlier in the month because he hadn’t yet agreed a new deal with the club.

But out of the three senior keepers at United, only Heaton is guaranteed a place in the squad next season.

Onana and Bayindir could leave the club and United are being linked with several replacements, including Martinez.
