Jannik Sinner claimed his third title of the season with victory in the China Open on Wednesday (1 October).

The Italian tennis star completed a terrific week in Beijing by defeating 19-year-old Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the ATP 500 final. The Australian Open and Wimbledon champion sealed the deal inside one hour 12 minutes in the Chinese capital, his first triumph outside of the Grand Slams.

Sinner was clinical on his serve with 10 aces and no break points conceded, while the world number two notched up 22 winners in a trademark performance at the China National Tennis Center.

“We will try to improve and push as much as we can,” said Sinner in his on-court interview following the final. “Let’s see how the end of the season is going to look. I’m very happy to share this with all of you.”

Contesting his first ATP final following a second win of the year against former Grand Slam champion Daniil Medvedev, Tien faced a stern test against the top seed. The USA teenager came up against the Italian for a maiden matchup in Beijing, unable to thwart the recently dethroned world number one.

With Sinner victorious in China and Carlos Alcaraz taking the title in Tokyo, both men remain in contention to finish the 2025 season as the ATP world number one.

Alcaraz remains on top by a margin of 590 points, though announced on Tuesday (30 September) that he will not compete at the Shanghai Masters this month.

This means that Alcaraz and Sinner could come out of the Asian swing with a points difference of just 390 points, as Alcaraz loses 200 points from his quarter-final finish at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament last year, while Sinner has the title and 1,000 points to defend.

There are two key tournaments that remain where both players are set to compete: the final Masters competition of the season in Paris, France, starting on 27 October, and the year-end ATP Finals this November in Bologna, Italy.
