Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer to miss England’s fifth Test against India

Ben Stokes will miss the fifth and final Test against India after tearing a muscle in his right shoulder, meaning Ollie Pope will captain England, while Jacob Bethell comes into the team for the first time since December.

England have made four changes to their XI from the draw at Old Trafford. Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse are both rested after heavy workloads in the previous two Tests, while Liam Dawson has been left out of the team after one game of his comeback following eight years out of Test cricket, having failed to take a second-innings wicket in 47 overs.

Jamie Overton comes into the seam attack for the first time since his debut and only Test against New Zealand at Headingley in 2022 and Josh Tongue returns to the side after missing the past two Tests. Chris Woakes keeps his place, meaning the 36-year-old will have played in all five Tests of the series.
