Paul Scholes shares one major doubt he has about Viktor Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal

After a long summer transfer saga, Arsenal fans will soon get a chance to see Viktor Gyokeres in competitive action under Mikel Arteta.

Following 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting CP, there’s reasonable excitement to see what Viktor Gyokeres can achieve back in English football.

The Arsenal striker was previously under contract with Brighton & Hove Albion and Coventry City, before he somewhat mirrored Jamie Vardy’s success — the Swede has found his goalscoring boots later in his career.

That being said, Gyokeres is still joining Arsenal in his prime, and Kai Havertz will surely be delighted to have some help up top.

Perhaps Noni Madueke’s arrival might help Gyokeres succeed at Arsenal too, but either way, Arteta’s attack will look a lot different next term.

Paul Scholes thinks Viktor Gyokeres wasn’t Mikel Arteta’s first choice

With that in mind, Paul Scholes has now raised an interesting point on ‘The Overlap Fan Debate’.

Scholes was talking about Gyokeres’ arrival at Arsenal alongside Jamie Carragher.

And whilst the former Manchester United player ultimately concluded that the Swede would be a good fit for Arsenal, he questioned whether he was the striker Arteta really wanted.

Scholes said: “Yeah, centre-forward, just wonder if you’ve chose the right one, you don’t know until it happens.

“Because there was a lot of umming and ahhing about it and it was taking a bit of time, I was wondering — does Arteta really want him? Is he the main one he wants? I wasn’t too sure.

“But look, he’s got him, and he’s had a really strange career path, I think, hasn’t he?

“He has, honestly, Brighton, Coventry, and he’s gone to Sporting Lisbon. His goal record is absolutely brilliant, you can’t take that away from him, and you think, if any team he goes to that creates chances, then it should be Arsenal and it should be a really good match, but we just don’t know until it happens.”

Mikel Arteta will now have to watch Benjamin Sesko at Manchester United

Although Andrea Berta ended up recruiting Gyokeres, TBR Football reported through the summer that Benjamin Sesko was in pole position to join Arsenal.

Of course, that all changed when RB Leipzig demanded an unreasonable amount for Sesko — at least that’s how Arsenal saw it.

But over at Old Trafford it appears to be a different case and Manchester United look set to win the race for Sesko.

That therefore means that Arteta will have to watch Sesko’s progress in the Premier League, week in, week out.

And if Gyokeres hits the ground running at Arsenal, that’s unlikely to be an issue.

But if there are any teething issues for the Swedish striker, then Arteta might be secretly jealous that United, who finished 15th last season, signed the striker he once wanted.
