Stefan Borson shares Newcastle’s response to ‘£150m Liverpool bid for Alexander Isak’

Newcastle can afford to reject a mammoth offer from Liverpool of £150million for Alexander Isak.

The Magpies are coming under increasing pressure to keep hold of their superstar striker, with the champions of England keen on recruiting the 25-year-old.

Isak’s representatives have spoken to Liverpool, finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider exclusively, and the player is keen to move to Anfield.

The Swedish striker’s departure would be a massive blow for Eddie Howe, as Newcastle have also fallen behind Liverpool in the race for Hugo Ekitike.

However, with the club in a strong financial position thanks to their ludicrously wealthy owners, the Saudi Arabian Private Investment Fund (PIF), Borson told Football Insider that the Magpies may be able to resist the Reds’ advances for Isak.

The 25-year-old was the Premier League’s second-highest scorer last term and despite interest from clubs like Liverpool, Barcelona, and Arsenal, the North Eastern side have so far been able to stave off attempts to lure their star man away from St. James’ Park.

Newcastle can afford to reject £150m for Alexander Isak

Borson told Football Insider that Newcastle were well-positioned to reject a huge bid for Isak, and given that his potential replacement would cost a similarly huge fee, the Magpies would not be earning that much from doing the two deals.

When asked whether there was any club in the world that could reject a bid of £150m for a single player, Man City’s former financial adviser said: “Well, I think it would depend on who the club was.

“Newcastle can say no, I mean, Newcastle are not in a normal situation. I think there are a few clubs in the world that can say no.

“So, Newcastle are definitely one of those clubs that can say no to £150m. Clearly, if the player was at a club like Brighton or Brentford, it would be a different situation.

“But Newcastle can definitely say no to £150m, and also, they’ve got to look at what it would cost to replace the player.

“We know that Ekitike is a player, completely unproven, obviously in the Premier League, never played in the Premier League, completely unproven at the Champions League level. You know, he’s not a complete gamble, but he’s quite a big gamble, and even he’s gonna cost, probably by the time we get to the end of the bidding close to €100m.

“So, in the grand scheme of things, £150m is not actually that much money when you break it down.

“You’re talking about, probably last season, the best striker in the Premier League. And the Premier League being the preeminent league. anyway, Newcastle can absolutely turn it down. They are in a privileged position.”

Newcastle eye move for Liverpool outcast Harvey Elliott

The Magpies are desperately keen to avoid losing Isak to the Reds, but that won’t stop them from trying to recruit players from Anfield.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle and Tottenham are the latest clubs to join the race for Harvey Elliott.

The former Fulham man was a key figure in England Under-21s’ triumph at the U21 European Championships this summer, but is still likely to leave Liverpool.

Elliott started just two Premier League games last term, and Florian Wirtz’s arrival at Anfield appears to have knocked him further down the pecking order.
