The Durand Cup 2025 football tournament got underway on Wednesday with East Bengal beating South United FC 5-0 in the opener at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

This is the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, which is the world’s third-oldest Cup football competition and the oldest in Asia. The Indian Armed Forces-organised tourney, running since 1888, is also the traditional curtain-raiser for the Indian domestic football season.

The Durand Cup 2025 format consists of two phases - a group stage and the knockout rounds.

For the group stage, the 24 teams have been drawn into six groups of four sides each. After single round-robin matches, the six group winners and two best second-placed sides across all groups will make the quarter-finals.
