The West Coast Eagles have welcomed former Geelong premiership player Mitch Duncan to the club’s coaching ranks and after a whirlwind past few weeks, the new coach has arrived in Perth.

After a decorated playing career spanning over 300 games with the Cats, Duncan now turns his attention to coaching, bringing a wealth of experience and football knowledge to the Eagles’ developing list.

“It’s been a pretty hectic couple of weeks,” Duncan said.

“One minute it’s leading into a grand final, and the next you’re house hunting back home in Perth. But I’m really looking forward to this new opportunity it’s great to be here in sunny WA.”

Duncan will take charge of the defensive line, working closely with both emerging and established players including Reuben Ginbey, Harry Edwards, Liam Duggan, and Liam Baker.

“There’s a great mix of youth and experience in the backline,” Duncan said.

“I’m excited to help develop the younger players and build a strong, cohesive defensive unit.

“It’s not just about the back six, it’s about defending as a team and setting up the ground well to rebound and create opportunities.”

Duncan’s passion for player development and tactical understanding made the move into coaching a natural next step.

“Having been in the game for so long, I’ve developed a strong understanding of footy and I’m keen to pass that on,” Duncan said.

“I’m looking forward to learning from Andrew McQualter and the rest of the coaching staff, while also contributing to the growth of our young group.”

Returning to his hometown, Duncan admits it’s been a bit of a whirlwind off the field too.

“It’s going to be pretty chaotic,” Duncan laughed.

“I’ll dive straight into coaching and leave the logistics to my wife. For me, it’s all about getting stuck into work mode.”
