Ousmane Dembele was on target for Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup and paid tribute to Diogo Jota

Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele paid tribute to Liverpool striker Diogo Jota during his side's Club World Cup win over Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old and his brother Andre Silva were laid to rest on Saturday after passing away following a road traffic accident on Thursday (July 3).

According to local police, the tyre blew out on Jota's car, resulting in a crash when attempting to overtake on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, as they prepared to travel back to England to return to pre-season. There was a large contingent of Liverpool staff members and players, past and present, in attendance for their funeral service at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar (the Mother Church of Gondomar) today.

Dembele rounded off proceedings in Atlanta as PSG overcame European rivals Bayern Munich in a 2-1 win to reach the Club World Cup semi-final.

The Frenchman was on hand to fire home from Achraf Hakimi's cutback to double the Parisiens' lead late on.

After the celebrations with his teammates simmered, he perched on the floor and pretended to play on a games console.

It was made an iconic celebration by Jota after scoring the winning goal in a dramatic win over Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.

Following the moment of class from Dembele, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate posted a screenshot of the celebration to his Instagram story, with the caption tagging his international teammate as well as three red hearts and two doves, adding: "mon free (my brother)."

Since the passing of Jota and his brother, who played professional football in Portugal's second tier with Penafiel, there has been an outpouring of emotion at Anfield, Molineux and across the world.

Paying tribute to his team-mate, Konate said: "Diogo... I still can’t believe it. I’m devastated. I have no words to express my feelings.

"Beyond the extraordinary footballer you were, there was an exceptional man, a friend, and brother! May you and André rest in peace.

"I am truly devastated by this news. This club, this family that we shared together, will never forget you!

"I think back to all the moments we shared and I still can’t believe it, they all seemed perfect... You can be sure of one thing: your family won’t walk alone. We’ll be there to help them through this devastating moment. "I would like to address the world: today it’s Diogo and his brother.

"Yesterday it was someone else. Tomorrow it could be us. Let’s enjoy every moment that life offers us, with our families, friends, even strangers. Let’s try to live in peace and send each other love. We don’t know what tomorrow brings. "I LOVE YOU, MY BROTHER."
