Bianca Andreescu made history for Canadian tennis and now Victoria Mboko is following in her footsteps.

Back in 2019 the 25-year-old burst onto the scene as a teenager and proceeded to win the Indian Wells title.

Five months later she proceeded to win the championship in front of her home fans at the Canadian Open, before becoming the first player from her country to win a Grand Slam by beating Serena Williams to win the US Open.

Six years later and 18-year-old Victoria Mboko won the title in Montreal, following in Andreescu’s footsteps by becoming just the third Canadian to win their home tournament.

Bianca Andreescu advises Victoria Mboko to ‘enjoy the moment’ following her Canadian Open victory

Victoria Mboko shocked the world with her magnificent displays throughout the Canadian Open.

Mboko followed Williams by becoming the second-youngest player after the former world number one to defeat four Grand Slam champions in one tournament.

She rallied from a set down to complete victory on three occasions, including against Naomi Osaka in the final. As a result, Mboko has moved over 60 places from 85 to 24 in the WTA Tour rankings.

Andreescu, who once walked in Mboko’s shoes after attaining success at a young age, appeared on CBC News to react to the teenager’s incredible achievement, and shared some key advice as she becomes tennis’ newest star.

“I can only speak from experience. For me, I think what’s super important is to enjoy the moment fully. You know, celebrate with your family, your friends, for as long as you can,” Andreescu said.

“But with tennis, you know, there’s a tournament every week, so that can always be difficult, but, you know, really savor it. But then, you know, it’s back to the drawing board.

“I’m sure she wants to achieve much more than just this tournament, which is obviously a great achievement, but you want to keep that momentum going.

“So focusing on the process rather than the results I think is super important because once you get a taste of it, you just keep wanting that.

“So it can be kind of a distraction of like you know, okay, I need to realize how to get there again because being consistent with it can always be a struggle. And then just surround yourself with people that truly care about you.

“With all the attention and media and whoever, um, you know, there could be people that want to work with her or you or just random people that want to be her friend. But I think it’s really important that she keeps her circle tight and really trust her intuition on who to keep in her circle.”

Like Mboko, Andreescu also competed at the 2025 Canadian Open.

The former WTA top 10 player continues to struggle with injuries and she was struck with another setback int he closing stages of her latest match.

Andreescu took on former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round of the WTA 1000 event in Montreal. As the Canadian was serving for the match, she fell and injured her ankle, which resulted in a medical timeout.

After returning to the court, Andreescu completed a 6-3, 6-4 victory, but Andreescu could play no further part in the tournament and withdrew before her second match.

Andreescu now said she is recovering from her injury and hopes to be fit for the upcoming US Open. “Yeah, for me I’m just rehabbing as much as I can,” she said.

“Obviously, it was really unfortunate what happened, but yeah, it’s just taking it day by day and I’m hoping that the US Open is a go for me.”
