Graeme Souness predicts whether Darwin Nunez will still be a Liverpool player next season

Graeme Souness has been discussing what he thinks the future holds for Darwin Nunez at Liverpool.

Whether you like it or not, Darwin Nunez is an enigma at Liverpool. He is the marmalade in Liverpool’s current squad.

You’re either obsessed and completely in love, or you wince every time you see him on the pitch. There really isn’t anything in between.

He is that type of hot and cold player. The type who will have a core loyal following, and a core group that utterly dislikes him.

Nunez doesn’t make it easy for himself. While there is so much to like about his game, there is no denying his finishing hasn’t been good enough this season.

Graeme Souness on Darwin Nunez’s future at Liverpool

It is his goal-scoring ability at the moment which separates from being disappointing to being one of the best strikers in European football.

It’s also what has cast his future at Anfield into doubt. Nunez has now spent two years at Liverpool. He’s had plenty of time to acclimatise to English football.

But he has still yet to showcase why Liverpool spent such big money to bring him to the club. It is moot whether he ever will.

However, according to Graeme Souness speaking on the Up Front podcast, Nunez will be given a chance at Liverpool next season. The former Liverpool legend has claimed that the Uruguayan will stay at Liverpool.

Although he has raised his concerns about whether that is the right decision.

“That will be my worry,” Souness said.

“Nunez will be there next year, they won’t sell him. He does all the hard yards, all the hard work, all the selflessness without the ball. He is 10 out of 10 in everything.

“But he is four out of 10 in terms of scoring goals. Salah doesn’t do anything like that in terms of the hard yards but he is 25 goals a year, if they lose him next year that’s something you will find very hard to replace.”

Can Arne Slot get the best out of Darwin Nunez?

Nunez’s one last hope may be Arne Slot. Liverpool’s likely new manager will bring a change of system with him and that could be of benefit to Nunez.

Slot actually has a great track record of getting the best out of his forwards in terms of their finishing and goal-scoring ability.

Perhaps he might just be able to work wonders with Nunez as well.
