What Tom Werner did when asked if Liverpool will sign Marc Guehi in January speaks volumes

Tom Werner kept his cards close to his chest when asked if Liverpool will make a renewed bid to sign Marc Guehi in January, after coming so close to landing the Crystal Palace captain this summer

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has refused to be drawn on whether the Reds will re-visit their interest in Marc Guehi in January. The England international saw a £35m move to Anfield collapse on transfer deadline day after Crystal Palace pulled the plug, having failed to sign a replacement.

The 25-year-old remains out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to leave Selhurst Park on a free transfer if he is not sold in January.

Liverpool remain interested in the defender, but at present, are unlikely to move for Guehi in January given the player will be available on a free at the end of the season.

However, Werner remained tight-lipped when asked whether he could out the possibility of the Reds moving for the defender when the transfer window opens.

The Liverpool chairman recently appeared on the latest episode of the ‘It’s Called Soccer’ podcast from The Overlap US, hosted by Crystal Palace supporter, Rebecca Lowe.

Unsurprisingly, Lowe was delighted that Guehi had ended up staying put at Selhurst Park.

“Tom, not to be mean, but I was obviously delighted that you didn’t get Marc Guehi because, as you can see from the shirt behind me,” she said, pointing at a Palace shirt. “Yeah, I’m absolutely delighted.”

“I know, you’re a Crystal Palace supporter,” he replied. “I want you to know, Rebecca, that when we didn’t get him, I thought about you and I knew you would be happy!”

Lowe then tried to find out if Liverpool were planning to make a fresh bid for Guehi in January, only to be left unsettled by a long pause from Werner.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tom, thank you! We’re just getting confirmation, Tom, confirmation you won’t be going back in January?” she asked? “Can you confirm that on Guehi?

"No? No confirmation? Oh no, I don’t like that!”

Laughing at Lowe’s question, Werner then jokingly replied: “You know what, all of a sudden, Rebecca, you went cloudy on me! I can’t hear you!”

It is no surprise that the Liverpool chairman opted against commenting on the Reds’ potential future transfer business. But it does speak volumes, given their continued interest in the player.

Arne Slot recently confirmed that the Reds still want to sign Guehi, as he shared his disappointment for both club and player that the move had fallen through.

He also would not comment on Liverpool’s January transfer plans, instead declaring: ‘Let’s see what the future brings for him and us.

“I think it would be ridiculous if I’m going to deny we were close to signing him,” he admitted ahead of facing Burnley last week. “That is so out in the open that that would be ridiculous.

“These things happen in football, it happened to our players maybe in the past as well that they thought they were so close to signing somewhere else and then in the last moment, things change. This can happen.

“For me, we would like to sign him of course, because we were in for him. Like I have said many times, if we feel we can strengthen the team with a chance in the market, we never hesitated to do so and that’s what we tried to do…

“It’s a pity but not only for us, but also for the player I think. But he’s in a good place, playing at Palace where he won the Community Shield and the FA Cup with a very good manager as well.

“Let’s see what the future brings for him and for us. If I am thinking anything (about the January transfer window), you know that what I think, I don’t tell you.”
