Newcastle consider bold move for Man Utd star, it would be unthinkable for Ineos

Newcastle are planning to move for a favourite among Manchester United fans in January.

Manchester United have endured a poor start to the 2025/26 Premier League season.

This has led to increased pressure on Ruben Amorim as United fans question key decisions as well as the head coach’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

There have been debates over goalkeepers, Amorim’s back three, implications on the midfield and a lack of goals. It doesn’t help that United have picked up four points from as many Premier League games, after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup following a defeat to Grimsby Town.

Amorim stresses he will not change his system, which doesn’t bode well for fringe players trying to edge their way into the starting line-up.

Newcastle consider move for Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo has been getting overlooked by Amorim since the start of the season.

With fears of limited game time during a World Cup year, Mainoo wanted to leave United on loan before the transfer deadline, but his attempts were blocked.

Amorim said Mainoo is competing with Bruno Fernandes for a place in the team, although the midfielder has managed just 73 minutes of action in the Premier League so far this term.

More United News

Despite a reported proposal to send Mainoo to Ineos, the 20-year-old remained at Old Trafford. Now there are suggestions that he could have more offers to leave the club in January.

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are keeping tabs on Mainoo ahead of the January transfer window.

It is understood that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is an admirer of Mainoo and would consider testing the water with an offer if he continues to find himself on the bench under Amorim.

This has resulted in members of United’s first team feeling perplexed by Amorim’s lack of faith in the young midfielder, who famously scored in the FA Cup triumph over Man City in 2023.

Mainoo has played in three of United’s five games in all competitions this season, but his only start came in the Carabao Cup defeat.

Ineos must avoid Mainoo mistake

There is a systemic issue with Mainoo since he is not considered fit to play in Amorim’s system.

Mainoo has proven to be a talent in multiple systems and he is only going to get better by playing regular football.

Ineos have prioritised young players since taking control of football operations at United, and they must urge Amorim to make it work with Mainoo.

Mainoo is arguably the most talented player to have come through the academy in the past 10 years.

Amorim must find a place for Mainoo in his team. The backlash would be significant if United let Mainoo go to Newcastle.
