Callum Lang scored a sensational four goals as Portsmouth came from behind to thrash Coventry 4-1 at Fratton Park, giving Frank Lampard, the visitors’ manager, a further reminder of how tough a division the second tier can be.Norman Bassette had given Coventry the lead inside 150 seconds but Lang – who had not previously scored a professional hat-trick – turned them around with a magnificent individual performance. It added some weight to Pompey’s survival hopes – they started the day in the drop zone – and gave them a fourth home game on the spin without defeat.Josh Windass and Callum Paterson fired 10-man Sheffield Wednesday to a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Stoke at Hillsborough. The Owls defender Di’Shon Bernard was dismissed in the first half but the hosts rallied in the second to secure an impressive three points.Bernard could have seen red earlier for tugging back his man, who was through on goal, but received only a booking. The defender would not get away with it a second time as he was sent off for a foul on Lewis Koumas in the 41st minute and Wednesday went in at half-time a man down. The hosts took the lead in the 52nd minute when Yan Valery played the ball across the box for Windass to scramble the ball over the line. James Beadle made a terrific point-blank save to deny Tom Cannon from a header, with the Owls keeper also clawing the ball away from goal at the second attempt. The Owls then doubled their advantage in the 76th minute after some tenacious work by Shea Charles down the right, with the ball squared across for the substitute Paterson to tap home. The Potters were awarded a penalty with just under 10 minutes remaining but Beadle made a brilliant diving save to his left to keep out Cannon’s spot-kick.View image in fullscreen Sheffield Wednesday players mob keeper James Beadle after his penalty save. With his side bottom of the table at the start of the day, the substitute Burstow brilliantly stopped the rot with a swerving low hit from outside the penalty area.Rubén Sellés must have earlier fancied his chances of a first win as new Hull manager when João Pedro scored after 34 minutes. But his side’s inability to keep a clean sheet was again laid bare when desperate defending allowed Harry Darling to equalise with a smart header eight minutes later.skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Football Daily Free daily newsletter Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football Enter your email address Sign up Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
