Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes both believe Rayan Cherki will have plenty of interest from English clubs this summer. The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool this season and reportedly turned down an approach from French giants Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

As well as the Reds, Cherki has also been linked with a move to Manchester United for the 21-year-old, and he was on target during Lyon's dramatic Europa League defeat to Ruben Amorim's side on Thursday night. Harry Maguire secured one of the most jaw-dropping European wins in United's history when he scored in stoppage time to secure his side a 5-4 extra-time win.

As reported by the ECHO before the January transfer window opened, a deal for Cherki at that time would have fallen in line with the 'opportunistic' approach to transfers by sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Slot in their first season at Liverpool. And speaking before the game at Old Trafford, both Ferdinand and Scholes believe the attacker could be in for an interesting summer.

"I think that there's gonna be clubs in for him - that's obvious," Ferdinand said on TNT Sports. "You look at the amount of assists that he's got in the top five leagues in all comps, he's third on that list.

"He's sitting there in some good company up there. He's gonna go to a bigger and better club than Lyon - no disrespect - I'm really interested to see when he does go, does he level up?"

Scholes then continued the conversation, saying: "He should be [relishing this occasion], he's in the shop window.

"I know Lyon, as we spoke about in the last part, have got some financial issues so he will be one player they can make a few quid on.

"This is a big night for him. If he performs, Manchester United I'm sure they'll be having a good look at him tonight but there will be many other clubs in England having a good look at him."

Referenced above by Scholes, Lyon are in financial difficulty as French football watchdog the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) handed the Ligue 1 side a winter transfer ban and a provisional relegation at the end of the current campaign as a result of financial mismanagement.
