Faf du Plessis overtakes Babar Azam's record in T20 cricket

South Africa’s Faf du Plessis has overtaken Pakistan’s Babar Azam to claim the record for most centuries as a T20 captain, following yet another breathtaking knock in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025.

The former South African skipper lit up Grand Prairie Stadium on Sunday, smashing an unbeaten 103 off 53 deliveries in the Texas Super Kings’ crucial win over MI New York, a victory that sealed their place in the MLC playoffs.

Du Plessis’ innings, laced with five fours and nine towering sixes, was not only his second century of the tournament, the first came against San Francisco Unicorns, but also a milestone-laden effort that etched his name deeper into T20 history books.

The veteran became the first player to score two T20 hundreds after turning 40, underlining his exceptional longevity and fitness.

More significantly, it was his eighth century as a T20 captain, taking him past Babar Azam and Michael Klinger, who are both tied at seven.

Babar, widely regarded as one of T20 cricket’s finest technicians, has notched seven centuries while captaining Pakistan, Karachi Kings, and Peshawar Zalmi.

Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis also carved out another record, becoming the player with the most centuries in Major League Cricket (MLC) history (3), overtaking New Zealand’s Finn Allen, who previously held the record with two.
