Mardy Fish gives his opinion on Ben Shelton's behaviour on court during his win over Flavio Cobolli in Canada

Ben Shelton and Flavio Cobolli were involved in a heated exchange after their match at the Canadian Open.

Shelton beat in-form Italian Cobolli in three sets at the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto, but the big talking point came after the match.

Following their match at the Canadian Open, Shelton and Cobolli appeared to have a tense exchange of words about something that took place in the match.

There has been a big reaction to this incident, with even former top 10 player Mardy Fish now giving his verdict on what happened.

It is not the first time that the young American has been involved in controversy, with Shelton once involved in a brief feud with Novak Djokovic after their match at the 2023 US Open.

Someone who has plenty of experience on the ATP Tour is former Olympic silver medallist, Fish, who was also the captain of the USA Davis Cup team until 2023.

Fish never got the opportunity to captain Shelton, but it appears that he views the world number seven in high regard.

In a post reacting to the incident between Shelton and Cobolli, Fish revealed that it actually made him like his compatriot even more.

Fish wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “I like Ben more and more every match he plays.”

Tennis fans criticise Ben Shelton for his behaviour at the Canadian Open

Although Fish liked what he saw from Shelton at the Canadian Open, it appears that not everyone feels the same.

Numerous tennis fans on social media called out Shelton’s actions, suggesting that he was being hypocritical.

One wrote, “Ben is probably the last person to take someone else’s celebration of a point personal knowing how over the top he is himself + this face when he wins..

“Nothing against you Ben but just be less sensitive.

Someone else added, “I don’t need context to know Shelton is the problem.”

An additional social media user wrote, “Shelton drama queen, like always.”

One more person said, “Shelton needs to get off his high horse. Dude wins and decides to b**** at handshake. Like shut up!! Zero humility.”

Shelton will now look to put this incident and any criticism behind him, as he looks to reach his first ever Masters 1000 semifinal.

Standing in the way of Shelton achieving that feat is Washington Open champion Alex de Minaur, who he has never actually played before.
