Richmond’s 2025 VFL senior coach Jake Batchelor and Head of Development Sam Lonergan will step into AFL line coaching roles for the 2026 season.

Batchelor, who will take over as the Backs/Defence line coach, has been a senior coach at VFL level for the past five seasons, having returned to Richmond after previously spending four years coaching Sandringham.

Batchelor stood out in an extensive interview process, impressing with his plans for the AFL backs and drive to make an immediate impact.

Richmond Executive General Manager Football Performance, Tim Livingstone, said that Batchelor would bring great energy to the role.

“Jake did a wonderful job with our VFL program this year, and we have full confidence in his ability to step into the AFL line coaching role for 2026,” he said.

Lonergan will further boost the AFL assistant coaching panel in a new role where he will work closely with the midfield group, specialising in stoppages.

A former TSL and SANFL senior coach, Lonergan has been a part of Richmond’s coaching staff for the past six years.

“Sam has been terrific working closely with our young players as Head of Development, and his knowledge and experience will now be important for our AFL midfielders and stoppage work,” Livingstone said.

“We are looking forward to seeing Jake and Sam continue to flourish in their new roles and for it to improve us as a team.”

Richmond will announce its new VFL senior coach and further additions to its development coaching set-up in due course.
