Pakistan Set to Drop Prominent Pacer Ahead of South Africa T20Is

As the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deliberates over the T20I squad combination for the upcoming series against South Africa, one name likely to miss out is Haris Rauf.

According to sources in Pakistani media, the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan in international T20Is is expected to be dropped due to his poor run of form with the ball.

The 31-year-old struggled to make a significant impact during this year’s Asia Cup. Despite taking 9 wickets in 5 games, his economy rate of 9.00 runs per over proved costly at crucial moments, including the final against India. Rauf conceded 50 runs in just 3.4 overs without taking a wicket, as India lifted yet another trophy.

The Asia Cup continued a disappointing 2025 season for him. In 15 matches this year, Haris Rauf has taken 23 wickets but maintained an economy rate of 9.10, well above his career average of 8.38.

If confirmed, the decision would send a clear message from the selection committee: performance will outweigh reputation. The PCB is reportedly considering Mohammad Wasim Jr. to fill the second pacer’s role, while Abbas Afridi and Naseem Shah are expected to be drafted into the squad after being left out of the Asia Cup roster.

For Haris Rauf, this potential exclusion could serve as a wake-up call. While he has consistently ranked among the fastest bowlers in the world, he may need to address some of his shortcomings to reclaim his spot.

The final squad announcement for the South Africa series is expected soon.
