NFL commissioner suggests potential Dublin game in 2025

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has suggested that Dublin could host one of the professional American football league's international games in 2025.

Speaking as the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers closed the 2024 NFL International Series with a game in Munich on Sunday, Goodell told the NFL Network that there could be up to eight games played in venues outside the United States next year, listing Ireland among the possibilities.

"We will certainly be back in the UK and we're also looking at the potential of another game in the UK area, in Ireland possibly. That's a possibility," he said.

Last month, Goodell had said that there was "no doubt" that Ireland would host an NFL regular season game in the future, adding that "I know the [Pittsburgh] Steelers really want to go there [Dublin]."

Only one NFL game has ever taken place in Ireland, a 1997 pre-season clash between the Steelers and the Chicago Bears at Croke Park that drew an estimated 25,000 fans.

As well as Munich, the 2024 NFL International Series saw one game played in Brazil and three in London. Games have also previously been played in Mexico.

Plans call for eight matches to be played outside the United States each year from 2025, with more in the pipeline if the NFL expands to an 18-game annual schedule from the current 17.
