Virat Kohli has been an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore setup since the inception of the IPL . This season too he has been firing all guns and he has been at the top of the run scoring charts.

But despite his scorching form, his strike rate and his ability to play spin balls have often come under heavy scrutiny. Virat recently came out openly taking on his critics after RCB ’s dominating win over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024.

"Not really, I think all the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones who loves talking about these stuff [numbers]. But for me, it's just about winning games for the team and there's a reason why you do it for 15 years because you have done it day in and day out,” he said in the post match presentation.

Sunil Gavaskar fired back at the RCB frontman as the former Indian skipper questioned his intentions. The eminent commentator insisted on why the 35 year old is bothered by outside noise as he earlier claimed not to be affected by all the chatters surrounding him.

Now former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram came out in support of Gavaskar . In an interaction with Sportskeeda, Akram said, "Both are greats. Sunny bhai, as a cricketer, as a human being, I know him off the field. As a commentator, he has been doing it for God knows how many years (decades), probably for more than two and a half years. And coming to the great man, Virat Kohli , he is a top player, a modern great. In fact, he is an all-time great in history, given the kind of performances he has had. But "I think Virat shouldn't have said it.”

He further added, "It is the commentators' job. If he got slow in a couple of matches and he [Gavaskar] said something, forget about it. Virat is not that kind of a person. Both are proud Indians; both are greats. It's OK; they both will move on pretty quickly. Don't think either will take it personally. They will be fine, I know. I am telling you now. I know them both very well."

RCB's hopes of qualifying for the IPL playoffs is still hanging over a thread as they will have to rely on other team’s results to see themselves through.
