Marc Guehi has been named in Crystal Palace's starting XI for their Premier League clash with Aston Villa this evening amid Liverpool's transfer interest in the defender.

The Reds are hoping to land the England centre-back before Monday night's 7pm transfer window deadline. A bid worth £35 million was submitted earlier this week after club-to-club talks.

Palace are understood to be desperate to keen hold of Guehi, who captains Palace against Villa. The Eagles are said to have enquired about Joe Gomez but the ECHO understands that there are no plans to let the versatile defender leave.

Saturday's bid for Guehi is understood to include a ten per cent sell-on clause but Palace are holding out for closer to £40m for a player who will leave the club on a free next summer.

"Yes, of course, he has a contract here for Crystal Palace, he plays well and trains well so that's clear," Palace boss Oliver Glasner said in a pre-match interview of Guehi's inclusion.

"He's our captain and he starts today as captain. "The situation is clear, everybody knows about it and Marc is a great guy and that's why he starts."

Glasner has repeatedly admitted his determination to keep hold of the 25-year-old for the campaign. However, it's likely that Palace won't want to let their star player depart as a free agent.

“Yes, of course, for players of that calibre to leave on a free, it is a problem for a football club,” Eagles chairman Steve Parish said. “There is no doubt about it, unfortunately. Joachim (Anderson) went (last summer to Fulham) and we couldn’t afford to lose both of them.

"We then had another bid in January but that was a difficult situation as well. We will just have to see what happens. It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.

“In the end, people trade players. That is what football clubs do. Of course, if you don’t care about tomorrow ever and put it all off, then we are a fantastic team.

“If we had four more players, I don’t know what we could achieve. Unfortunately, it is not always as simple as that. We have got a lot of outgoings this year because we are paying a lot of transfer fees for players that we have already got.”

It's already been a busy summer for the Premier League champions but they could still pull off a couple of blockbuster signings as the window comes to a close. Meanwhile, Marc Guehi has been a player of interest all summer and Liverpool could still launch a last-minute deal for the Crystal Palace defender.
