Liverpool is bracing itself for a battle to secure the signature of Marc Guehi in January.

The 25-year-old was on the brink of joining the Premier League champion on transfer deadline day. Crystal Palace had agreed to a £35 million ($47 million) offer from Liverpool for the England international, who has less than a year remaining on his contract.

A deal sheet was submitted before the cut-off on Monday, and Guehi had already recorded his goodbye video. However, Palace couldn't secure a replacement, and manager Oliver Glasner dramatically threatened to resign if his skipper was sold in the final hours of an underwhelming summer transfer window for the FA Cup winner.

In the end, Glasner got his wish, and Guehi, who remained professional throughout the ordeal, is still with Palace.

It's believed that Liverpool intends to renew its interest in the Palace defender when the January transfer window opens, hoping to negotiate a bargain deal given he'd have six months left on his contract. But Liverpool may not be the only interested party.

From January 1, Guehi will be permitted to engage in talks with foreign clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement.

This would see him stay at Selhurst Park until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season before moving to a new club next summer, likely after representing England at the World Cup.

Coincidentally, Liverpool's own Ibrahima Konate is out of contract next summer; he's being linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid.

After four seasons at Palace, Guehi seems prepared to bid farewell. In the club's leaked goodbye video, the 25-year-old expressed: "I'm a south London boy; grew up in south London; captained the club from a young age.

"They've been fantastic for me and my family. Definitely a pleasure to play for this football club."

Following Guehi's goal in Palace's 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, Glasner piled pressure on Palace's management.

"We have to keep him. I told this to the chairman. It's not for me," Glasner confirmed.

"I like Marc, he's such a professional player, and is such a nice guy, but it's for the future of Crystal Palace, it's for playing a successful season. We have to keep him.

"We've talked about this situation and said, 'Okay, we're just selling Marc if we have the right replacement'. If we don't have the right replacement for me, it's clear to keep him."
