More FIFA Club World Cup betting tips have just landed!

Thursday’s selected games all have respected European colossi in action against opposition from the Americas. Such is the beautiful cosmic ballet of group stage football, we’ve gone full circle back to Group A.

As we all know, that was the only one which (at the time of writing) failed to produce a single goal on the opening matchday. By contrast, there were seven in Group B, though with PSG netting four of them, we’re already pretty sure as to who will top that group.

Porto to win

As expected against a Palmeiras side in the middle of their domestic season, Porto rode their luck at times in the opening Club World Cup matchday. Much of the credit goes to Claudio Ramos, who pulled off five saves to ensure that his side weren’t the first Europeans to lose to non-European opposition in the current CWC edition.

They had chances to win themselves of course, and it could have been a cruise after a strong opening 20 minutes, but for Rodrigo Mora missing from inside the six-yard box and Martim Fernandes seeing a header thwarted by Weverton. Now with their engine fairly oiled, they should have the ability to overcome an Inter Miami side that struggled to contain the relatively more modest threats of Al Ahly.

Porto Goals 2-4

In terms of simply avoiding defeat in their own opener, Inter Miami’s luck outstripped that of Porto by a considerable distance. Only a Trezeguet penalty miss prevented them from opening the CWC with a dispiriting, and very anticlimactic home defeat. Notably, Al Ahly mustered more shots on target and ended up ‘winning’ the xG stakes by a considerable distance (1.98 to 0.70).

Porto aren’t likely to let them off to the same degree if we see similar stats on matchday two. And although the back end of the Primeira Liga season now seems like a long time ago, there’s a chance Porto could rediscover the form that saw them do what they did in the four wins they posted during the final five games of their domestic campaign, and meet the 2-4 Goals band.

As for Inter Miami, they were without a clean sheet in 10 games before their opening day draw, and permitted their opponents on the day to score multiple goals in five of the last six games in that sequence.

As expected the last time Porto were under the microscope, Aghehowa was a prime target, suffering five fouls. That stunted his chances of growing into the game against Palmeiras and making good on his pre-match status as Anytime Scorer market favourite. He’ll no doubt be marked closely again, but Inter Miami’s defence looks very vulnerable in the face of a guy who bagged 19 goals during the 2024/25 Primeira Liga campaign.

European champions Paris-Saint Germain are on another level right now, and proved it when subjecting Atletico Madrid to a 4-0 malleting on day one. It mattered not a jot that it was just an opening matchday in a competition they have no financial need to win – they did what they’ve done well all through 2024/25, and laid waste to their opponents.

Atletico’s second test lies in stark contrast to their first. They are massive favourites to win comfortably against Seattle Sounders, who found even fellow Group B underdogs Botafogo too much to handle, going down 2-1 to the Brazilians in the early hours of Monday morning.

With Seattle now gearing up for successive matches against bonafide European giants, they are hotly expected to bow out with zero points. Atletico clearly have goals in them, and while they badly underperformed once finding themselves behind to PSG, they have lately thrived when the momentum is in their favour. Their last four wins of the LaLiga season saw them beat the -2 handicap, so this pick is actually a more conservative call.

2nd Half Goals 1-3

With so much talent at Atletico’s disposal, specific goalscorers are hard to predict. Instead, the next part of this MMBB explores when Atletico are likely to do the most damage. Going back to the point made about Atletico and how they thrive on ‘momentum’, an early start could see them go on to get the job done before half-time, and leave them with a second 45’ that is based on energy preservation.

Atletico will want to stub out any chance of an upset after the events of matchday one, forcing Seattle to defend deep. But Seattle’s resistance surely cannot last forever in reality, and in addition to main attacking influences Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth and Angel Correa, the Rojiblancos also have a wealth of resources from the bench. In turn, this looks like a very feasible overall second-half goals range that Atletico should fully account for.

Not much to say here. What PSG did to Atletico bordered on legalised murder, and Botafogo will surely suffer a very similar fate against the European champions. It doesn’t matter if the Brazilian outfit try to play for a point – which would ensure that they go into the final group matchday in second spot – PSG always find a way through, and have now won by a multi-goal margin in five straight outings.

Four of those five victories also saw PSG ahead at the break, with the league games in that streak contributing to a near-perfect win rate from a half-time lead (W18, D1).

The Parisians have also now scored each side of the break in both of their last two games. If Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid let them do it, surely Botafogo will… though we’ll happily eat humble pie if ‘O Fogo’ succeed where those European giants failed.

Alongside Goncalo Ramos, Kvaratskhelia is one of two players who are odds-on to net anytime. He managed to carry over some momentum from the tail end of PSG’s quadruple-winning season into the tournament opener, notching two assists before the break.

Pure logic dictates that he can easily go one better against Botafogo, who are still considered a ‘lesser’ side than Atletico, despite their respective matchday one results.
